DOOR ZINE, ISSUE 1: METAL BARS

Call for Pitches

DOOR ZINE is a new online magazine that explores society and culture through creative interpretations of thresholds that lead to a space.

The inaugural issue of DOOR ZINE opens the METAL BARS that gate detention facilities, including but not limited to prisons, zoos, hamster habitats, bird cages and the madness of our minds. Tell us about enclosures of all sizes and confinement at any scale, from the inside or out. These bars can be real or imagined, literal or figurative. Have stories about the woes of a correctional officer? The architecture of supermax prisons? A flock of birds set loose from an aviary? Being tied down in a nightmarish relationship or a job? We’re looking to feature stories of captivity (and/or escape) from around the world.

Types of writing we’re looking for
Reported articles with a style of voice
Honest and casually profound personal essays
Literary work, including poetry and short fiction
Film or book reviews that zoom in on features that are relevant to the issue theme
Offbeat interviews that include at least one curveball question
Profiles of eccentrics, obsessives and lost souls
Hyper-realistic screenwriting
Photo essays that tell stories or offer insights
Letters and postcards
Knock knock jokes

We are open to other types of work. Have artwork, audio, photography or video that falls in perfectly with the theme? Try us! For all ideas, please email thedoorzine@gmail.com with a short pitch and approximate word count. The deadline for pitches is October 15th, 2023. Selected pitches will be notified by early October.
