Types of writing we’re looking for
- Reported articles with a point of view and a style of voice
- Profiles of eccentrics, outcasts, and overlooked “out-and-out freaks” in the tradition of Joe Mitchell
- Well-crafted, honest, casually profound personal essays
- Literary work, including poetry and short fiction that lay bare ugly truths, emotions and impulses
- Film or book reviews that zoom in on features that are relevant to the issue theme
- Offbeat interviews that avoid platitudes and include at least one curveball question
- Hyper-realistic screenwriting that makes a compelling argument or a poignant observation
- Photo essays that tell stories or provide insights
- Letters and postcards to real or imagined people
- Knock knock jokes
Of course, we are open to other types of writing. Have artwork, audio, photography or video that falls in perfectly with the theme? Try us! For all ideas, please email thedoorzine@gmail.com with a short pitch and approximate length. The deadline for pitches is September 25th, 2023. Selected pitches will be notified by early October.
